Sa\u00f4ne \u00b7 Rh\u00f4ne \u00b7 Floods \u00b7 History<\/span><\/p><\/header>

For several weeks now, continuous rainfall has swollen the Sa\u00f4ne River, transforming the quays into a veritable aquatic landscape. Access points are closed, the banks are impassable, and even the Terrasses de l'\u00cele Barbe are flooded. An impressive situation\u2026 but far from unprecedented in Lyon's history.<\/p>\n\n<\/section>

A spectacular rise in water levels<\/h2>\nAt Couzon-au-Mont-d'Or, the Sa\u00f4ne reached 5.70 meters<\/strong>, compared to 3.15 meters a week earlier. A dramatic rise, accompanied by a flow rate nearing... 1,500 m\u00b3\/s<\/strong>. In other words: a veritable waterway crossing the metropolis. A direct consequence: the river shuttle. Navig\u00f4ne<\/strong> is suspended at least until February 23, as navigation conditions have become too dangerous.\n\n<\/section>

        Why do these floods keep recurring?<\/h2>\nThe floods in Lyon result from a combination of factors: continuous rainfall, saturated soils, snowmelt upstream, and sometimes Mediterranean weather events that amplify the phenomenon. The Sa\u00f4ne, a slow-moving and wide river, reacts differently from the Rh\u00f4ne: it rises more gently\u2026 but also recedes more slowly.\n\n<\/section>
