💛 Why we love it
Because its architecture resembles a spaceship straight out of a science fiction film (nicknamed "The Cloud") and it offers a fascinating journey through the history of humankind and the Earth. We love pretending to be explorers amidst the skeletons of giant dinosaurs, meteorites, and ritual masks from around the world. But the real highlight is its unique location: after the visit, we love going up to its panoramic terrace or strolling through its outdoor garden to admire the magical spectacle of the confluence, the exact spot where the Rhône and Saône rivers merge. A vibrant, intriguing, and utterly spectacular place!

The Natural History Museum Musée des Confluences is an architectural gem in Lyon, located at the confluence of the city's famous rivers. At the southern tip of the peninsula, between the Rhône and the Saône, this building, often compared to the Millennium Falcon, surprises with its deconstructivist architecture.

Directed by Hélène Lafont-Couturier and designed by Wolf d. Prix and Coop Himmelb(l)au, this 5,000-square-meter space houses an eclectic collection of 2.2 million objects, covering fields as diverse as the earth, life, social sciences, and technology, to name just a few. Despite the delays and political disputes that marked its construction, this museum has become a must-see attraction in Lyon since its opening in 2014, drawing over 823,000 visitors in 2015.

An Architectural Odyssey

Although the museum's architecture was the result of numerous controversies and took much longer than expected to be completed, it has nevertheless managed to establish itself in the Lyon landscape.

Designed without a center, without apparent symmetry, it defies classical architectural conventions, sparking debates about the role of architecture in representing the collections it houses.
