There Fresco of the Lyonnais is a monumental trompe-l'œil mural located in the 1st arrondissement of Lyon. Created in 1994-1995 by the artists' cooperative CityCreation, It pays tribute to thirty personalities — historical and contemporary — who have left their mark on the city and its cultural, scientific and gastronomic influence.
History and design
Commissioned by the City of Lyon to revitalize the intersection between the Martinière Street and the Saint-Vincent quay, The mural covers approximately 800 m² of the facade. The project required nearly nine months of work. The artwork is part of Lyon's tradition of painted walls, emblematic of CitéCréation's expertise, which is exported worldwide.
Composition and characters
The wall features, on several levels, thirty figures from Lyon from different eras: Saint Blandine, Louise Labé, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry accompanied by The Little Prince, André-Marie Ampere, Paul Bocuse, Bernard Pivot, the Lumière brothers, or even Father Pierre. The oldest ones appear on the upper floors; the most contemporary ones, at street level, engage in a symbolic dialogue with passers-by.
Visual and symbolic effect
Created using trompe-l'œil techniques, the fresco blends painted elements with real architecture: windows, balconies, and planters seem to open onto these illustrious "inhabitants." This illusion gives the whole a lively and theatrical aspect, transforming the facade into an open-air museum.
Cultural importance
Having become one of the city's major attractions, the Fresco of the Lyonnais illustrates local identity and the inhabitants' attachment to their heritage. It is part of the circuit of painted walls of Lyon, representing the fusion of urban art, collective memory and Lyonnais pride
