The Lyon Opera

Set your sights on one of the most iconic and fascinating monuments of our beautiful city: theLyon National OperaMore than just a theater, it is a true symbol of Lyon's cultural wealth, harmoniously blending history, bold architecture and world-renowned artistic performances.

A Rich History and a Controversial (but Successful!) Renovation

The history of the Lyon Opera dates back to the 18th century. The first theater was built in 1756 by Jacques-Germain Soufflot (yes, the same one who designed the Panthéon in Paris!). It was then replaced in the early 19th century by a new neoclassical-style structure, the work of Antoine-Marie Chenavard and Jean-Marie Pollet, of which only the magnificent main façade and side walls remain today.

But the image we all have in mind is that of the building crowned by its spectacular barrel-vaulted glass roof. It is the result of a daring metamorphosis, carried out between 1985 and 1993 by the world-renowned architect Jean NouvelThis project, which aimed to modernize the Opera House and double its surface area, caused a lot of ink to flow at the time! The controversy was fierce: should a historic monument be "decapitated" in order to add a contemporary structure?

Today, it's clear that the gamble has paid off. The alliance between the original neoclassical architecture and Jean Nouvel's bold modernity gives the Lyon Opera a unique and easily recognizable identity, making it worthy of the world's greatest opera houses. At night, when illuminated, its dome transforms into a magic lantern, an artistic beacon in the city.

Architecture: A Dialogue between Old and New

Take the time to admire the details of this building. The main façade, with its columns and statues of the Muses (originally eight in number, one muse is "missing" because her niche was transformed into an emergency exit during the renovation!), bears witness to its glorious past. Then, look up: Jean Nouvel's glass and steel vault rises above, housing the six additional levels that made it possible to expand the stage, improve the backstage area, and create new rehearsal and administrative spaces.

Inside, the magic continues. The foyers, staircases, and of course the performance hall itself are an elegant blend of old and new, where spectator comfort is combined with artistic excellence.

Beyond its architecture, the Lyon Opera is above all a leading venue for artistic creation and dissemination. It is one of the few French opera houses to have a permanent chorus, orchestra, and ballet of the highest caliber.

  • The Opera: Recognized for its bold and innovative productions, it offers a varied program, ranging from the great classics of the lyrical repertoire to contemporary creations.
  • The Ballet: The Lyon Opera Ballet enjoys an international reputation. Its company is renowned for its contemporary repertoire and its collaborations with renowned choreographers.
  • The Orchestra and the Choir: These excellent ensembles contribute greatly to the quality of the shows, offering musical interpretations of great finesse.

The Lyon Opera is also very committed to transmission and education, offering numerous cultural mediation activities to make opera and dance accessible to all audiences.

How to Enjoy the Lyon Opera?

    • Attend a show: This is obviously the best way to discover this venue. Check out their online program on the official website of the Lyon Opera. There's something for every taste and budget (even discounted tickets for those under 28!).
    • Visit the places: Although guided tours are not always regular due to busy schedules, the Opera House occasionally organizes open days or themed tours. Check their website for more information.
    • Admire from the outside: Even without attending a show, the Opera House is a monument worth contemplating. Located across from the Hôtel de Ville, it's at the heart of a vibrant neighborhood in Lyon. Feel free to stroll around and admire it from different angles, day and night.
    • Enjoy a break with a view: Did you know that the Lyon Opera also has a bar and restaurant? Located on the top floors, the Opera's panoramic bar (often called " The Muses » in reference to the statues on the façade) not only offers an elegant setting for a drink or snack before or after a show (or even without attending a performance, depending on opening hours and crowds), but above all a breathtaking view of the rooftops of Lyon and the Place de la Comédie, with the Hôtel de Ville in sight. It is an ideal spot to admire the city from another angle, particularly at sunset. A suspended moment, where the pleasure of the eyes prolongs that of the senses after (or before) the music and dance.

The Lyon Opera is much more than a building; it's a soul, a heart beating to the rhythm of Lyon's culture. Don't miss the opportunity to discover it during your next visit to Lyon!
