Lyon pedestrianizes the northern part of Rue de la République

There Republic Street, an emblematic artery of the city center of Lyon, enters a new era. Since the summer of 2025, the northern part of Republic Street, between Cordeliers And the Terreaux, has become pedestrianA major change that is part of the urban project “Peninsula to live in”, led by the City and Metropolis of Lyon to give priority to pedestrians and soft mobility.

🚶‍♀️ A major transformation for the Lyon peninsula

This pedestrianization marks a new stage in the metamorphosis of Lyon city center.
There Republic Street North, formerly frequented by several bus lines, now welcomes pedestrians, cyclists and terraces in a more peaceful setting.
The noise of the engines gives way to that of footsteps and conversations, giving the Presqu'île its promenade atmosphere.

There pedestrianization of the north of Rue de la République comes with numerous adjustments:

  • Plantations and trees in the ground to provide more shade,
  • Street furniture redesigned for rest and conviviality,
  • Expanded terrace areas for cafes and restaurants,
  • Cycle paths connected to the main arteries of the Peninsula.

These changes contribute to a broader objective: to make Lyon a greener, breathable and pleasant city to live in.

Pedestrianization is accompanied by a restructuring of the TCL networkBuses no longer run in the northern part of Rue de la République:

  • The lines C3, C13, C14 and C18 are diverted towards the Grenette Street and the Saône quays,
  • The stops Louis Pradel Town Hall And La Feuillee Soil are deleted,
  • The stop Cordeliers was moved in front of the Boulanger store,
  • New stops are created: Peninsula Terraces And The Leafy.

The result: a quieter city center, but still well served.

  • Cross the whole Lyon Peninsula on foot without crossing any vehicles,
  • Enjoy a continuous journey between Bellecour, Cordeliers and Terreaux,

The initial feedback is positive: pedestrian traffic is increasing, businesses are reinventing themselves, and tourists are enjoying a more pleasant experience.

📍 A little history

Inaugurated under the Second Empire, the Republic Street was designed as a modern showcase for the city of Lyon. More than a century and a half later, it has been transformed once again, a symbol of a regional capital looking to the future and towards sustainable urban planning.
